EIE/NMT

The Law Lyceum prepares its students for the External Independent Evaluation (EIE) using special programs, which are automatically included in the curriculum as additional subjects. For students who are not enrolled at the Law Lyceum, there is a separate program to prepare for the EIE.

EIE — External Independent Evaluation is a standardized test in Ukraine for school graduates that assesses their knowledge and is mandatory for admission to higher education institutions, ensuring objectivity and equal access to universities, although it is currently being replaced by the by the National Multisubject Test (NMT) as a result of martial law in the country.

What is it?

  • Purpose: To test the academic achievements of 11th grade graduates in various subjects (Ukrainian language, mathematics, history of Ukraine, foreign languages, biology, geography, physics, chemistry).
  • Goal: To ensure a transparent and objective process of admission to higher education institutions, reduce corruption, and give every applicant a chance.
  • Result: Graded on a 100-point scale (from 100 to 200 points) for each subject separately, which affects the competitive score for admission.

NMT (National Multisubject Test) is a mandatory online computer-based exam in Ukraine that replaced the ZNO for admission to higher education institutions during martial law. It includes three compulsory subjects (Ukrainian language, mathematics, history of Ukraine) and one subject of choice, allowing applicants to take all exams in one day to obtain the necessary scores for admission to higher education institutions. mandatory subjects (Ukrainian language, mathematics, history of Ukraine) and one subject of choice, allowing applicants to take all exams in one day to obtain the necessary scores for admission to a higher education institution.

What is the NMT?

  • Format: A computer-based test conducted online at special testing centers.
  • Purpose: To assess the knowledge of applicants for admission to bachelor's (or master's) programs in medical specialties.
  • Replacement for the External Independent Evaluation (EIE): Introduced as a temporary alternative to the External Independent Evaluation (EIE) during wartime.

Test structure (typical for 2025):

  • Compulsory subjects (3): Ukrainian language, mathematics, history of Ukraine.
  • Elective subject (1): Foreign language (English, German, French, Spanish) or biology, chemistry, geography, Ukrainian literature, physics.

How does it work?

  • Participants complete all sections of the test in one day.
  • Points are awarded for correct answers, which are then converted into a rating scale.
  • This rating determines the applicant's chances of admission to the university.

The NMT is a key tool for admission to Ukrainian universities and allows the assessment process to be concentrated in conditions of martial law.

EIA vs NMT

  • ZNO: A classic exam format with separate tests (2-3 hours each).
  • NMT: A computer-based test that combines several subjects into one exam (e.g., Ukrainian language, mathematics, history of Ukraine) and is conducted in wartime conditions.

Key points

  • Conducted by the Ukrainian Center for Educational Quality Assessment (UCEQA).
  • The results of the ZNO/NMT are a key factor for admission to Ukrainian universities.

The EIE/NMT is a kind of "fairness filter" for admission, although the system is constantly adapting to new challenges.
